Passive headsets block noise with tight ear seals and foam, cost the least and need no batteries, but clamp harder and let more low-frequency engine drone through. Active noise reduction (ANR) headsets add microphones and electronics that cancel low-frequency noise, so they can use lighter clamping and reduce fatigue on longer flights, at a much higher price. Both must have the right plugs for your aircraft.
The headset is the first big purchase for most pilots. It protects your hearing and decides how tired you are after a flight.
Side by side
| Passive | ANR | |
|---|---|---|
| Noise reduction | Ear seals and foam | Seals plus electronic cancellation of low frequencies |
| Clamping force | Higher | Often lower |
| Weight | Often heavier | Often lighter |
| Power | None | Batteries or panel power |
| Price | Lowest | Highest |
| Fatigue on long flights | Higher | Lower |
What to check
- Plugs. Match your aircraft: GA dual plugs, LEMO 6-pin or helicopter U-174. See headset plug types.
- Fit and clamping. Try for an hour, with sunglasses on.
- Microphone. Noise-canceling electret mics are standard.
- Ear seals. Gel or foam; gel often seals better around glasses.
- Bluetooth and audio priority. Lets ATC override music.
- Warranty and service. Headsets are long-term purchases.
Protect your hearing
Small aircraft cabins are loud enough to damage hearing over time. A well-fitted headset, of either type, is essential.

Common questions
Is an ANR headset worth it for student pilots?
Many students start with a passive headset and upgrade later. ANR reduces fatigue, which helps on longer lessons and cross-countries.
What happens if an ANR headset battery dies?
Most still work passively, with less noise reduction. Carry spare batteries.
What is NRR on a headset?
Noise reduction rating, a lab-based measure of passive noise attenuation in decibels.
Do I need Bluetooth on an aviation headset?
It is convenient for phone calls on the ground, music and EFB audio, but not required.
